Spotted Lanternfly 3D Print Resources Available

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is slowly invading the North Central region, being positively identified in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. While research and monitoring programs have been ramping up in these states, training the general public, organizations that interface with the public such as parks departments and specialty crop growers are key stakeholders to include in any outreach program. Detection and reporting of almost all SLF populations have come from the public so a strong outreach awareness campaign is one of the best ways build a reporting network to quickly identify populations around the state.

While SLF guides and publications ranging from identification, biology and management have been produced and readily shared from early infested states, a recent Environmental Protection Agency SLF–funded outreach project at The Ohio State University focused on creating 3D printed egg masses, black and red nymphs and adult stages to train stakeholders on identification. Each training session included general background on the pest, biology, hosts, and management, and then focused on active learning to enhance the search and identification skills of participants. Prior to the meeting, dozens of 3D printed SLF life stages were attached to various substrates in a range of open to hidden locations. After the general education was completed, participants were released in a controlled scavenger hunt to locate as many life stages as possible in a timed period. Advanced versions of this training include using a survey tool such as Qualtrics to upload images via mobile phone so that identification accuracy can be analyzed later.

Now you can use these 3D prints of SLF life stages for your trainings, too! You can either order limited quantities of 3D prints through the OSU SLF store for use in specific training programs or you can download and print the SLF models on your own 3D printer.

The 3D models will be shipped for free until supplies are exhausted, and then a small fee will be charged.

To download and print the SLF models yourself, visit the Thingiverse website. Both .3mf and .stl files are available. This is a great option for building inventory and distributing 3D prints for large-scale statewide outreach programs.
