Partners in IPM: Working Groups

Pulse Crops Working Group=

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines a pulse crop as "an annual leguminous crop yielding one to 12 seeds of variable size, shape, and color within a pod that are used for food and animal feed." The commercial production of cool season pulse crops (field pea, lentil and chickpea) is drastically increasing across the north central region, and with this has come increasing pests. The Pulse Crops Working Group (PCWG) held a meeting in March to update research activities and enhance collaboration. During the meeting, we developed a mission statement: Advancing sustainable and profitable pulse crops production through collaborative Integrated Pest Management (IPM) research and outreach to provide a focus moving forward to aid in planning group activities/outputs. We also designated responsibility for collecting information on, and photographs of, important diseases towards developing pulse disease diagnostic cards to provide growers with a field-durable user-friendly guide to disease diagnostics.

Pulse Crops Working Group (PCWG) Priorities

Priorities for this working group include fostering collaboration among the PCWG members for increased grant submission, research and outreach activities, manuscript publication and developing grower-focused IPM materials for pulse crops. Another priority is continuing and expanding formal and informal knowledge and material transfer among members.
