Texas A&M, Department of Entomology invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Entomology with a specialization in tick biology and tick-borne diseases. This is a campus-based, tenure-track, 10-month appointment in College Station, TX with effort distributed in Research (60%), Teaching (30%) and Service (10%).
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for developing an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program in acarology. Preference will be given to individuals with an established track record in tick biology and tick-borne disease research with a demonstrated ability to publish their research in high quality, peer reviewed journals. Evidence of an ability to secure extramural funding is strongly desired. Other faculty at Texas A&M engaged in research on tick-borne diseases are in Animal Science, Ecosystem Science and Management, Wildlife and Fisheries Science, the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, and the Health Science Center as well as faculty at other institutions within the Texas A&M System. The incumbent is expected to work effectively with USDA scientists, various state agencies and commissions who are tasked with monitoring ticks and tick-borne diseases of livestock and humans. As the land grant university in the State of Texas, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate an ability to work with stakeholders and to participate in outreach activities in Texas and regionally, and to lead national programs in tick biology and tick-borne diseases.
High quality teaching is expected of all faculty. The typical classroom teaching load in the Department of Entomology is teaching a 3-credit undergraduate course and leading or participating in one or more graduate level courses. We expect the successful candidate to teach a graduate course in Acarology (ENTO 617) already offered on an alternate year basis. Assignment of other teaching duties will be dependent upon the interests of the faculty member and the needs of the department. In addition, as an active participant in the Western Gulf Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases, the incumbent is expected to engage in the educational activity in support of the Center.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Entomology or related biological field completed prior to the date of the appointment to the faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in developing and testing novel control methods for ticks with a focus on preventing spread of tick borne diseases in livestock. Additional desired qualifications include experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level and experience in mentoring students.
