Precision Biosciences is seeking a seasoned scientist manager with experience in metabolic engineering and genomics, to drive its pipeline of genome editing programs in agriculture focused on improving human health, wellness and sustainability. This individual will be responsible for building and leading a team dedicated to the translational development activities necessary to advance these programs to create innovative, healthy and sustainable food solutions.
The Director of Crop Innovation will report to the President of PlantSciences. The successful candidate will be a hands-on, participative manager who will make significant contributions to the strategy and execution within a diverse R&D organization.

The Precision Biosciences team seeks to solve significant problems in oncology, genetic disease, agriculture, and beyond, via its ARCUS genome editing platform. ARCUS is Precision’s proprietary, nuclease-based genome editing platform which now encompasses an industry leading combination of site specificity, ease of delivery, and breadth of editing capabilities.
Position Summary
The Director of Crop Innovation (DCI) serves as the head of all internal and external research and development activities at Precision PlantSciences. The DCI is also assigned the responsibility of expanding applications of Precision’s ARCUS genome editing platform in all aspects of translational agriculture to realize the Company’s strategic growth and mission. As an experienced professional in plant sciences, the Director of Crop Innovation plays a key role in identifying disruptive technologies and collaborations in genomics, molecular breeding and metabolic engineering to complement ARCUS-driven initiatives. In addition to managing R&D programs, the DCI will contribute up to 30% of his/her time working with Precision’s CEO and the President of the PlantSciences team to generate impactful product concepts and other business development activities.

• The DCI will be responsible for all internal and external research and development activities within PlantSciences.
• Recognizes, recruits and improves technologies that are complementary to the ARCUS platform to enable expedited crop improvement for internal and partnered programs.
• As the leader of all research efforts within PlantSciences, the DCI is required to build strong collaborative, professional and personal relationships with colleagues across teams within Precision and upholds the core values and mission of Precision in the industry.
• The DCI will establish a high-throughput pathway engineering capability in a variety of crops using the ARCUS platform. The DCI will work with the senior leadership at Precision to formulate and execute new IP-generating initiatives in support of ARCUS and its applications in Agriculture.
• As a team leader, the DCI builds, leads and manages the team(s) in line with Precision’s strategic plan and performs high quality, milestone driven research to advance Precision’s mission.
• Further, the DCI coordinates, supports and coaches the team members, ensures availability of all necessary tools and initiation of actions that safeguard the progress and completion of research programs in compliance with objectives. Additionally, the Director of Crop Innovation will collaborate with the President of PlantSciences on a regular basis to develop and monitor the progress of internal and external programs, budgets and spending strategy.
• As a manager, the Director of Crop Innovation monitors and constantly evaluates research programs for quality and effectiveness and contributes towards efficient program management. The Director of Crop Innovation also conducts routine appraisals and development meetings with the team members to ensure operational excellence.

Professional Experience and Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.
Education/Experience
• Ph.D. degree in a scientific competency area (e.g. plant sciences, molecular genetics, applied genetics, molecular biology or applied bioinformatics). Experience in metabolic engineering is highly desired.
• Scientific expertise with demonstrated knowledge and experience (> 10 years) in the scientific competency area and a track record of high impact publications and patents.

• Provable track record with applied or strategic R&D and innovation, management experience and excellent communication skills.
• Capable of creating and implementing high quality innovative concepts for R&D development and execution (program and project proposals and reports, patents, sales of products and licenses, publications, presentations, innovation platforms).
• Broad and deep understanding of coherence between disciplines, technologies, traits and the integrated application in market-oriented research and product development.
• At least 10 years of working experience in the field of expertise.
• Experience and an appreciation for multicultural and multinational collaborations, teams and clients.
• Experienced in leading researchers, scientists and technicians.
• Experienced in IP filing and interactions with the legal teams.
• Experience in scientific business development desired.
Reasoning Ability
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard
office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax
machines.
