FMEL announces Postdoctoral Fellowship

A postdoctoral associate (PDA) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Derrick Mathias, Assistant Professor at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory in Vero Beach and is supported by the CDC Southeastern Regional Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases. The PDA will investigate naturally occurring microbes in populations of Aedes aegypti and their influence on reproduction and arbovirus transmission. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) sampling mosquito populations in the field, coordinating sampling effort and specimen logistics with collaborators, establishing and maintaining mosquito colonies, extracting nucleic acids from mosquito specimens, screening samples for microbes and mRNA transcripts, and performing laboratory experiments on reproduction and arbovirus transmission. The PDA is expected to take the lead on data analysis and dissemination of findings through scholarly publications and presentations at scientific conferences.

Applicants should have a PhD in entomology, microbiology, or a closely related field, as well as experience working with mosquitoes, molecular biology and/or molecular microbiology. Those with a solid background in advanced molecular biology/biochemistry and/or experience with experimental mosquito infections are encouraged to apply. The position is for a maximum of two years. However, renewal is on a yearly basis and is contingent on performance.
